On Average We Spend Almost $3K A Year On Unused Groceries

Do you fill your fridge with leftovers, but end up forgetting about them and not eating them? A lot of us do, according to a new survey. It finds that on average, people put leftovers in their fridge three times a week, but nearly a third of them (32%) forget about them as soon as they’re out of sight.

The poll also reveals:

  • The average American spends about $248 a week on groceries for their household, while one in 10 spend more than $500.
  • Unfortunately, they’re not eating all that food and end up throwing out about $63 worth of those groceries.
  • Over the course of a year, people spend nearly $3-thousand on unused groceries.
  • While 43% of respondents eat their leftovers until they’re gone, a quarter admit they get tired of eating the same thing over and over, so they don’t finish them.
  • 23% of grocery shoppers say they end up buying at least five foods a week that they wish they could get in smaller sizes, like grapes and fresh herbs.
  • The hardest foods to use up are lettuce (27%), bananas (23%) and milk (21%).
  • Seven in 10 of those surveyed are trying to cut down on food waste, by doing things including using leftovers creatively (55%), creating a meal plan (37%) and composting (17%).
