Campbell’s Reveals Most Popular Thanksgiving Side Dishes

Halloween is the holiday on everyone’s minds this week, but Thanksgiving is right behind it and new research focuses on that feast. Campbell’s has just revealed their 2024 State of the Sides Report giving us a look at what Americans like to pile on their plates most for their holiday meal.

For the report, Campbell’s surveyed 5-thousand adults from all 50 states about the details of their Thanksgiving dinner.

  • The results confirm something many of us already knew, side dishes are the main attraction on Turkey Day.
  • More than half (56%) of respondents prefer eating side dishes over turkey, while 38% would be happy to skip the turkey and have a sides-only meal.
  • And 60% say they enjoy cooking the sides more than the turkey.
  • Aside from the sides, Campbell’s finds that folks who opt for a nontraditional Friendsgiving celebration are more likely to get creative in the kitchen. A third of those polled say they consider Friendsgiving a time to experiment with new recipes and flavors.
  • So, what is the favorite Thanksgiving side dish? Overall, stuffing/dressing is number one for most of the country, but some states have other ideas. Mashed potatoes are number one in California, Wyoming, Utah, Iowa and West Virginia.
  • Wyoming’s top five sides also include cranberry sauce, Virginia loves bread, and green vegetables are a favorite in South Carolina.
