If you feel like things are so awful in your relationship that you need to end it, you might need to sleep on it. Science says being tired could be the problem. According to a new study, sleep deprivation affects our happiness, even in our romances.
Researchers had 70 newlywed straight couples complete surveys, which asked questions about how much sleep they got and how good it was. They also had to rate how satisfied they were with different parts of their relationship, like sex or communication, and how happy they were with the relationship as a whole.
And it turns out, the people who slept more were happier in their relationships as a whole, even if something negative happened that day, like an argument. According to the study’s authors, sleep helps maintain our brains’ “self-regulatory strength” - which is the part of the brain that helps us deal with the ups and downs we face during the day and keeps us looking on the bright side.
So when we don’t get enough sleep, we have a harder time overriding the negative stuff and we start thinking one little fight could be a sign we should breakup with our beloved. And if you feel like ending things with your sweetie, maybe take a nap first, just to make sure. It can’t hurt!
