A new study published in journal Physiology and Behavior found that people who ate while staring at their smartphones consumed more calories than those who focused on their meals.
As a part of the study, 62 volunteers between 18 and 28 were presented with a variety of food options, ranging from fruits to junk foods like sweets and soda.
And the results found that diners who used their phones while eating devoured 535 calories more, on average, than the participants who didn’t.
Phone users also consumed 10 percent more fatty foods than those who dined without their phones.
“Tablets and smartphones have become the main ‘distracters’ during meals, even early in childhood, so it is important to pay attention to how this may impact food choices,” Márcio Gilberto Zangeronimo, a researcher at Federal University of Lavras and co author of the study, told the Daily Mail.
“A distracter prevents the brain correctly understanding the amount of food ingested.”
A January 2018 study found that only a third of Americans can’t eat without their phones.
