Not everyone looks forward to hitting the gym everyday, but we still need to stay fit and healthy, so walking is a good way to get moving. Some exercise is better than none at all, right? But how many calories does walking burn?
Well, the exact number depends on factors including your weight and pace, but personal trainer and wellness coach KatePfeifer explains, “for the average person, walking one mile would burn around seven calories per minute.”
According to Pfeifer, “If walking one mile took you 15 minutes, you’d burn approximately 105 calories.” Pfeifer says that’s why she incorporates a daily step goal into her clients’ routines, so if they hit their 10,000 step goal, that’s the equivalent of walking five miles a day. Walking that much means they’d burn an average of 3,500 calories per week.
Now, if you want to torch even more calories while moving your feet, try adding some wrist weights or pumping your arms as you walk. And if you really want to increase the burn, the fitness pro suggests doing some bodyweight exercises, like a set of lunges, squats, or push-ups every quarter mile.
