We Are Abandoning Our Diets For The Holiday Season

There’s no doubt it’s been hard to stay healthy this year, with many people reaching for comfort food to get them through the pandemic. And while some may have eventually gotten back on track, a new survey finds that’s likely to go out the window now because the holiday eating season is upon us. 

According to a new survey:

  • 56% of Americans are “writing off the year” and using the holidays as an excuse to give up their healthy eating.
  • 43% of given up their diet because of holiday food.
  • The average person expects to gain seven pounds over the holidays.
  • After the year we’ve had, 61% of Americans feel they deserve to indulge over the holidays.
  • And a lot of folks didn’t even wait for the holidays.
  • 43% say they already started putting off their healthy habits by mid-November.

When it comes to the holidays, the issue isn’t only what we eat, but how we eat it.

  • Some of the worst eating habits over the holiday season include:
    • Eaten so much they’ve had to undo a button on their pants or loosen a belt (45%)
    • Eaten more than one of the same meal in a day (43%)
    • Eaten more than one dessert at a meal (43%)
    • Eaten more than three meals in a day (35%)
    • Eaten until they feel sick, unwell and/or full to bursting (30%)
    • Eaten an extra-large midnight snack (25%)
    • Hid their favorite holiday foods/treats to save for later (12%) 

Of course a lot of folks are planning to get back on track once the year is over.

  • In fact, 62% are planning to make a New Year’s resolution to get healthy next year.
  • Top health-related resolutions include:
    • Exercising more (26%)
    • Making healthier food decisions (25%)
    • Focusing on self-care (21%)
