New Haunted House Embraces Kids’ Least Favorite Treat: Raisins

We all have our own favorite Halloween candies, but one thing most trick-or-treaters can agree on? A box of raisins is the last thing kids want to find in their treat bag. Even the folks at Sun-Maid know it, and this year they’re embracing it with a raisin-themed haunted house and experience in New Jersey.

The raisin brand realizes that as good as their product is the other 364 days of the year, no kid wants them instead of candy. So they’ve set up a tongue-in-cheek “Raisin House” dedicated to trick-or-treaters’ fear of them. It’s located in Merchantville, New Jersey, which has a tradition of rebranding as “Monsterville” every year for Halloween and Sun-Maid is getting in on the festivities by taking over the house at 3 East Cedar Ave.

The Raisin House of horrors currently features raisin-themed decorations that can be viewed from outside, but the real fun starts on the day of Halloween:

  • Trick-or-treaters will be able to walk up to the front door and get Sun-Maid snacks from an “interactive hand sampling wall” that includes a frightful mix of both decorative and real hands.
  • Those brave enough to enter will find a “scare corridor” with zombies dressed in red bonnets, like the Sun-Maid raisin box girl, handing out samples at the end.
  • Those same zombies will participate in the town’s Halloween Zombie Run and will give out more samples.

Harry Overly, president and CEO of Sun-Maid explains, “This year we're acknowledging that there's perhaps nothing scarier than getting raisins on Halloween — except being the house that hands them out.”
