While we all should really stay home from work when we don’t feel well, many people wouldn’t think of calling in sick, and a new report reveals why.
A new survey finds:
- 58% of Americans say they avoid calling in sick to work out of fear they’ll be reprimanded by their employer.
- 55% of those polled say they must give their managers a reason for calling out.
- 66% of those people feel like their bosses never believe their reasons.
- Because of this, many workers wind up going to the office sick.
- In fact, over the last year, workers have gone to work despite feeling sick an average of three times.
- 58% say they even forced themselves to push through despite feeling so bad they couldn’t get out of bed.
And working from home has almost made things worse.
- While they aren’t exposing co-workers to their illness, 68% of those working from homee say they feel obligated to work because they are home, even if they are sick.
- Most of these people say that the only reason to take a sick day is if they had COVID.
- Over the last year, the average worker has only called in sick three times.
- 68% say one of the other reasons they don’t call out sick is because they can’t afford it.
- 63% say they feel guilty calling in sick because of the burden placed on their co-workers.
