We Spend Over 1k Hours A Year In The Kitchen

Do you feel like you’re always in the kitchen? A new survey suggests people may spend more time in that room than any other. It finds that the average American spends more than 1-thousand hours a year in the kitchen.

The poll of 2-thousand U.S. adults looks at time spent in different parts of the home and finds:

  • Half (49%) of respondents have guests at their house at least once a year.
  • When hosting, they spend a lot of time together in the living room (51%) and dining room (32%) and one in seven say they love spending time with friends and family in the kitchen.
  • One in nine respondents consider the kitchen to be “the heart of the home” because it provides comfort, meets their needs, and is a space to spend time with family and friends.
  • As for the cooking they do there, nearly three-quarters (73%) say they enjoy it at least sometimes, while 53% feel cooking a meal is just as fun, if not more fun, than eating it.
  • No matter where they hang out with their guests, having company means cleaning up the day before for 74%.
  • One in six admit they actually have a hard time focusing on other things when their house isn’t clean, and 53% confess that they “always” or “often” think about needing to clean their home.
  • While the kitchen gets used all the time, it’s not high on the list of cleaning priorities for many. People use their microwave (46%), dishwasher (50%), and stove or oven (51%) seven or more times a week, but don’t always clean them every week.
