Our Favorite St. Patrick’s Day Foods

What’s on the menu for your St. Patrick’s Day celebration? Just in time for the holiday next week, a new survey looks at Americans’ food preferences for St. Paddy’s Day meals.

According to the poll of more than 2-thousand U.S. adults:

  • Nearly two-thirds (65%) of Americans enjoy eating traditional and Irish-inspired foods on St. Patrick’s Day.
  • The favorite meal of those that celebrate the holiday is corned beef and cabbage (40%), followed by fish and chips (28%), corned beef on rye (27%), reuben sandwiches (24%) and shepherd’s pie (19%).
  • They also enjoy Irish soda bread (17%), Irish stew (15%), pastrami on rye (15%) and bangers and mash (11%).
  • As for where they enjoy these meals, 55% eat their St. Patrick’s Day meal at home, while 31% have it at a bar or restaurant.
  • Overall, Americans are happy with these traditional foods, as 42% agree there shouldn’t be any changes to the holiday menu offerings and 22% want more authentic Irish options.
  • But 20% would like healthier options, 16% asked for more unique options and 10% are interested in vegetarian options.
  • People are pretty picky about their corned beef sandwiches, and there are a few things they’d never add to one, including hummus (47%), avocado (43%), ketchup (40%), olives (40%) and hot sauce (38%).
  • When it comes to bread, they’re happy with rye, as 25% would say no to a corned beef sandwich on white bread and 19% say wheat bread is not an option either.
