Three-Quarters Of Us Think Fast Food Is Now A "Luxury"

It feels like everything is more expensive these days, even fast food. A quick stop at a drive-thru used to be a fast and cheap alternative to cooking for yourself, but it seems those days are over. New research suggests that it’s become so expensive, most Americans are eating it less often.

According to a new survey from LendingTree, 78% of Americans see fast food as a “luxury.”

  • While three in four people polled typically eat fast food once a week, 62% say they’re eating it less because of rising prices.
  • Nearly two-thirds (65%) have been shocked by the high price of a fast food bill in the last six months.
  • While 67% of respondents say fast food should be cheaper than eating at home, 75% say that’s just not the case.
  • Consumers are also frustrated by the fact that fast food prices are outpacing general inflation numbers since 2014.
  • Apps for some fast food chains help to lure customers back, as 46% of those polled use apps for fast food restaurants that entice them to come in more often.
