With yesterday (Wednesday, July 17th) being World Emoji Day, there’s a new study out by Superside which reveals the top 10 emojis most at risk of going extinct. The analysis examined the usage and search volume of the top 100 emojis from 2013 to the present day, highlighting which emojis have fallen out of favor globally and within the U.S.
- The report found that the OK hand emoji (👌) is now the most unpopular worldwide, followed by the flushed face (😳) and the raising hands emojis (🙌).
- In America, the winking face with tongue emoji (😜) is the least popular.
- In almost every city in the U.S., the information desk person (AKA person tipping hand) emoji (💁), often used to represent a hair flip, is the most endangered, except in El Paso, Virginia Beach, Long Beach, and Tulsa, where it’s still seeing use.
- The smirking face emoji (😏) ranks as the least popular in 40 out of 56 analyzed U.S. cities and is also declining in 38% of countries around the world.
- In addition to these, the face screaming in fear emoji (😱) is also seeing a decrease in use in nearly half (47%) of European countries, making it one of the most endangered emojis in Europe.
- The decline in popularity of these emojis is attributed to the introduction of new emojis by Apple, which users find more relatable.
- The study lists 14 emojis in danger of extinction, including the OK hand emoji (👌), which is least popular in major cities like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore, and Miami.
- These rankings show that once popular emojis can see a significant shift in usage over time.
