How Long the Buzz Of Finding A Good Shopping Bargain Lasts

Does the thrill of scoring a good bargain give you a good buzz? A lot of shoppers experience that feeling afterwards and it’s not a fleeting feeling for many of them. New research reveals that “post-purchase glow” lasts for an average of 216 minutes, or just over three and a half hours.

A survey of 2-thousand U.S. adults and their shopping habits finds that 10% stay on cloud nine for the rest of the day after getting a good deal, and 22% are high on that good bargain buzz for at least four hours.

  • Shoppers aren’t shy about their savings, they’d brag about getting a bargain to friends (59%), their partner (40%) and to extended family (27%).
  • More than half (54%) consider themselves the best bargain hunter they know and 60% claim they can find a deal on anything.
  • So what do they count as a good deal? Respondents need to save 36% on average, to make it worth their time, but one in five say they need an item to be at least half off.
  • But shoppers aren’t always patient, including a third of those polled who’d only wait up to a week for something to go on sale before buying it at full price.
  • While 48% have a plan for shopping and mostly stick to it, 30% admit they veer from their plan in the store and 20% just wing it altogether.
  • Over half (56%) of Americans say they never pass on a good deal, even if it’s something they don’t need.
  • Shoppers say the things that are most overpriced this year are gas (47%), fast food (46%), meat/fish (42%), cars (35%) and cell phones (35%).
  • But they say there are some things that are worth the splurge, including cell phones (21%), appliances (20%), computers/laptops (20%), personal care items (19%) and TVs (18%).
