New research is exposing the sexual health habits of Americans, specifically some we’d really rather not think about - sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). More people than you think actually have one and those who are unfaithful may want to be careful. According to the study from DatingNews.com, 55% of people who have an STD got it from a cheating partner.
- Researchers analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau to figure out how and where Americans are contracting and spreading STDs.
- They also surveyed 1,000 people between the ages of 18 and 79 to get the dirty details.
The study reveals:
- Overall, 81% of American adults are sexually active, but one in three have never been tested for an STD.
- So, why are they avoiding it? They say they’re embarrassed (25%), don’t have time (22%) or the money (19%).
- Nearly one in five (18%) of respondents admit they’ve been diagnosed with an STD.
- The most common one is chlamydia, which accounts for 36% of the cases.
- Almost half (45%) of those polled didn’t discuss getting tested for STDs with their partner before they started having sex, but 13% say their partner lied to them about not having an STD.
- The research also points out STD hotspots, with Mississippi having the highest rate at 1,187 cases per 100-thousand people.
- Louisiana is second (1,145), followed by Alaska (1,066) and South Dakota (933).
- According to Dr. Gabe Gaviola, there are more than 20-million new cases of STDs reported in the U.S. every year.
- The first-ever National Get Tested Day is coming up on September 30th, and experts encourage everyone who’s having sex to get tested.
