We Daydream About Vacation More During Winter

How much time do you spend daydreaming about your next getaway? According to new research, the average American thinks about 40 minutes a day dreaming of their next vacation. While that may not sound like a lot, over a week, it adds up to 4.7 hours.

The survey of 2-thousand U.S. adults also reveals:

  • We daydream about new adventures and being on vacation even more during the winter, when that 40 minutes goes up by 16%, for a total of 46 minutes a day.
  • So, how are people spending all that time thinking about vacations? About 21 minutes goes to watching travel vlogs, while 25 minutes is spent on other social media content related to destinations and travel.
  • The average respondent also looks at tickets and pricing for around 22 minutes every week, plus another 26 minutes a week talking to friends and family about going somewhere else.
  • Does all this daydreaming and planning get in the way of our jobs? It definitely does, as employed respondents estimate they spend around 2.3-hours a week thinking about travel while on the clock.
  • That adds up to a full work day a month!
  • Nearly half (46%) of employees say it’s motivating to think about travel goals, trips and destinations while working, while 19% say it’s not.
  • When it comes to their performance at work, only 36% feel their work and productivity takes a hit in winter when they’re dreaming of vacation.
  • The average respondent admits they complain about their local weather three times a week and 63% say they’d happily trade the winter season at home to go somewhere tropical instead.
  • But even if they can’t actually get away for a vacation, people still get inspired by photos of their dream destinations, with 45% saying they have a tropical picture, beach picture or warm weather photo somewhere at home, like as a screensaver or the wallpaper on their phone.
