Restaurants are the perfect place for people-watching, especially when you get to watch a date unfold. People who work in those restaurants have seen it all from couples and they know people aren’t always on their best behavior when they’re out to eat. Since Valentine’s Day is tomorrow and restaurants will be filled with tables for two, servers and etiquette experts are sharing the most annoying things couples do in restaurants.
Consider this a list of what not to do during your romantic Valentine’s Day dinner:
- Playing paparazzi - Documenting your romantic night out is fine, but cluelessly snapping photos and getting in the way of servers navigating a busy restaurant is not. And if you want someone to take a photo of you, ask another couple, not a server who’s slammed.
- Making a scene - You’re not on a reality show, so save the drama for somewhere else. Don’t make waitstaff and other guests feel uncomfortable by arguing at the table.
- Talking cutesy - While no one wants to see a couple fight at dinner, they also don’t want to listen to baby talk or hear all your pet names for each other.
- Packing on the PDA - A smooch here or there throughout the evening is one thing, especially on a romantic holiday, but making out in a restaurant? It’s not only inappropriate, but inconsiderate to those around you, too.
- Feeding each other - Unless it’s a baby, nobody wants to watch someone feed bites to someone else in a restaurant. It’s a little creepy and definitely not sexy, so please, just don’t.
- Expecting special requests for free - If you’re celebrating something special, by all means, go all out. Restaurants are ready to sell you champagne or desserts to honor your occasion, just don’t expect them to give it to you for free.
- Demanding reservation miracles - Being spontaneous can be fun, but for holidays and special occasions, it’s best to plan ahead. Restaurants book reservations far in advance, especially for nights like Valentine’s Day, so they’re unlikely to be able to accommodate you at the last-minute, no matter how nicely you beg.
