Tips To Help Identify Your Dog’s Emotions

Dogs are like family to most people, but unlike family they can’t come out and tell you what they’re feeling, something we probably wish would be the case with our people family. But even though our four-legged friends can’t speak, there are ways to know how they are truly feeling, and now experts are clueing us in to what we should be looking for.

According to experts at Pure Pet Foods, here’s what to be looking for to identify your pet’s emotions:

  • Happy – Look for your dog’s ears to be up (not forward) with their tail down and relaxed.
  • Alert – Their eyes will be open and bright, and if their ears are forward they may actually be listening to you.
  • Anxious – If they’re avoiding eye contact with you that’s a clear sign, plus sweaty footprints, a raised paw or flattened ears may tip you off.
  • Fearful – Growling and barking is a major indicator of fear, as is rolling on their backs, or tucking their tails under their bodies.
  • Vulnerable – If you’re dog is rolling on their backs, or pushing for more belly rubs than normal, this could be a sign.
  • Angry – Is your dog’s mouth open and baring their teeth? That means they’re angry with you. Also if their body is stiff or if they look like they’re about to lunge forward, they’re pissed.
  • Relieved – Your dog’s eyes will probably start to soften and their heads will return to a lower position.
  • Playful – This one’s pretty obvious, if their tail is wagging, it’s playtime. Also if they bring over their favorite toy, you know what they want to do with it.
