We’re all dealing with a lot with everything going on in the world, so the stuff that makes us smile is more important than ever. And new research finds it’s the little things that are bringing people joy right now. A new survey of 2-thousand adults reveals 83% of respondents agree it’s the small things in their day that make them the happiest. The poll ranks America’s top “little joys” and topping the list? Seeing a loved one after being apart for a while.
According to the survey, lots of these little things people look forward to are related to nature and the outdoors. Being inside listening to rainfall or a thunderstorm, the smell of the ocean, and having a sunny, blue-sky day all land in the top 30 on the list. So it makes sense that nearly three-quarters (72%) of respondents say they’re more likely to find “little joys” during the summer.
The poll also finds:
- The average respondent experiences four “little joys” a day.
- 78% of those surveyed say the little things have become even more important to them in the last few months.
- Nearly a third (64%) of respondents admit to having a sweet tooth and those who do are also more likely to say they’re typically a happy person (52% versus 34%)
- 68% like having a sweet treat at the end of the day to boost their mood and on average, they treat themselves to something sweet about four times a week.

- Seeing a loved one after being apart for a while - 40%
- Sleeping in a freshly made bed - 39%
- Feeling the sun on my face - 39%
- Getting something for free - 39%
- Having time to myself - 35%
- Hugging a loved one - 33%
- Finding money I didn’t know I had - 32%
- The first sip of coffee in the morning - 30%
- The clean feeling after a shower - 30%
- Getting an “I’ve been thinking about you” type text - 28%
