Dog Owners Are Naming Their Pets After The Coronavirus

Scotty's Golden Casey

Does anyone really want a reminder of the terrible year that was 2020? Well, apparently some dog owners do, because a new report claims folks have started naming their pooches after the coronavirus.

According to the dog walker and pet sitter site Rover, pandemic-inspired pet names were all the rage this year. The most popular was Covi, which saw a 1,159% increase, followed by Rona, up 69%, and Corona, up 24%, with Covie also trending.

But the pandemic wasn’t the only thing to inspire pet names this year. Thanks to “Tiger King,” the dog name Carol (as in Carol Baskin) was up 46%, while Geralt, of “The Witcher,” was up 9,308% and Mando, inspired by "The Mandalorian," was up 2,658%. Keanu was also a popular name, while Betty White continued to be a trending animal name. There were also a lot of musical names, including Lizzo (up 458%), Kanye (up 33%), and Taylor (as in Taylor Swift) (up 92%).

In bad news for the Kardashians, names like Khloe, Kourtney, Kim, Kylie and Rob all saw a decrease.

But even with these pop culture-inspired names, none of them are the most popular for pooches, with the top female dog name being Bella and the Top male dog being Max.
