As hot vax summer approaches, lots of folks are hitting the gym and tweaking their Tinder profiles to get their sex lives going again. But they may want to focus on something else to spruce things up in the bedroom - their diet. Sex therapist Dr. Bat Sheva Marcus explains that what you eat can have a major effect on your overall wellbeing, including your sex life.

With healthy diets and sex lives, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach that works for everyone, but experts advise getting enough fiber, fruits and vegetables, as well as enjoying your meals. To find your way to better sex by way of the kitchen, here’s what you should be eating.

  • Dietary fiber - It might not be considered sexy, but it does help you feel light and prevent bloating, which can kill the mood. Foods like whole wheat bread, oats, chickpeas and spinach are loaded with fiber that will keep you full, but not too full, which is good when it’s sexy time.
  • Fresh fruits and veggies - They’re high in fiber, vitamins, minerals and other micronutrients and they’re a big part of a pro-sex diet. Fruits and vegetables promote good cardiovascular health, which is important for people of all genders. “If your blood is flowing well, it’s easier to get aroused and have an orgasm,” explains Dr. Marcus.
  • Foods you enjoy - You know which foods make you feel sexy and which ones don’t. You may love a good steak, but feel too tired for sex after eating one, so instead focus on foods that make you feel happy AND leave you feeling good so you’re ready when the mood strikes.
  • There’s no magic food or supplement for great sex - No matter what pills, powders and aphrodisiac foods promise, most of them won’t give you a hotter love life. Besides not working well, supplements could be risky because they aren’t well regulated and it can be hard to know what you’re actually taking. Feeling healthy and confident in your body is what makes for good sex and getting there is different for everyone. Dr. Marcus says, "The more you can learn about yourself and how you respond, the better."
