Why You Hate The Way You Look In Every Photo

If you’re one of those people who post influencer-level photos on their social feeds and have never had to untag themself from an ugly photo, congratulations. You’re doing great. Now if you’re the type of person that is convinced they are doomed to a lifetime of ugly photos, listen up. It’s not your face. Here is what is really going on.

  • Your Brain Is Tricking You Into Disliking What You See. Researchers have found that our brain plays a trick on us where it convinces us that we’re hotter than we actually are. Add in another psychological phenomenon called the “mere-exposure hypothesis” where our brains get comfortable seeing ourselves from certain angles, and you’ve got the recipe why seeing a photo from an unflattering camera position makes us feel like the ugliest human walking the earth.
  • You’re Not A Professional. Yes, models are born hot, but they also practice looking hot. If you want to take a great photo, you can do the same. Sit in front of a mirror and find your angle. But remember, much like models, no matter how hard you try, you’re still going to take a few weird-looking photos.
  • Your Cameraperson Isn’t Hyping You Up Enough. You’ve most likely seen a professional photographer at work either online, on tv, or maybe even in person. Whoever you’re handing your phone off to grab your picture is not one of them. They don’t know what makes a good pic, they don’t know how to coach you into a good pose, and they probably don’t want to take the picture in the first place. Photographer David Suh says your best solution is to turn your significant other into a “human tripod.” Get all the settings ready and the angles right so all they have to do is press click.
