Can You Wear White After Labor Day?

Now that Labor Day is over, there will be some people packing away all their white clothes, because of the old rule that you’re not allowed to wear white after Labor Day. But is that really true?

Most style experts agree it’s perfectly fine to wear white after Labor Day. In fact, the rule comes from The Emily Post Institute and is so old it dates back to the early 1900s, when it was “an age where there was a dress code for practically every occasion." Back then, wealthy people would leave the city between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and wear “lighter, whiter summer outfits” at their seaside cottages or mountain cabins.

Of course, that’s not the case now but according to personal stylist Sarah McDonad there are those who are “dead set” on sticking to the rule, noting those people are “blown away” to find out it’s perfectly okay to wear white post Labor day. She notes, "They just stay in their comfort zone."

Personal stylist Dacy Gillespie says the decision to wear white should be based more on whether it makes sense to wear it. "If it is in the dead of winter and it’s muddy out, yeah white shoes probably don’t make sense," Gillespie says. "It’s more about the specific outfit and the specific occasion than it is about the rule."

McDonald adds that folks really shouldn’t take fashion “rules” seriously, noting fashion is "really supposed to be so much fun and it’s supposed to be a way to show your personality." She adds, “So you might as well just do what you love and wear what you love…as long as your clothes fit good, it really, all the rules are off the table.”
