The Best States For Nurses, Check Out Where NM Stands

Nurse Appreciation Week kicks off on May 6th, although these hard-working professionals deserve our appreciation all the time. Americans found new respect for nurses during the pandemic, as we watched them risk their own health to care for others. Even when we’re not experiencing a major public health crisis, nurses have always worked long hours in stressful conditions, but it turns out, some locations offer them better benefits than others.

  • A new report from WalletHub reveals the Best States for Nurses in 2023.
  • They compared all 50 states in 20 key metrics related to nursing jobs and opportunities, including monthly average starting salary, annual salary, healthcare facilities per capita, quality of nursing schools and mandatory overtime restrictions.
  • Washington has been named the best state for nurses overall, coming in third for opportunity and competition and seventh for work environment.
  • New Mexico, which is third overall, is first in opportunity and competition, while Oregon, fourth overall, is number one for work environment.
  • On the flip side, Hawaii lands at number 50, making it the worst state for nurses in 2023.
