Half Of Us Consider Our Car Part Of The Family

How do you feel about your car? It turns out, a lot of Americans are really attached to theirs, so much so that 51% consider it to be “part of the family,” new research reveals.

According to the survey of 2-thousand car owners in the U.S.:

  • More than half (53%) would keep their current car forever, if they had the option.
  • Many feel that way for practical reasons, as nearly six in 10 (58%) say they want to keep their current car because it’s reliable and 45% say it’s because of the good gas mileage it gets.
  • But some want to hold onto it because of an emotional attachment (22%), for others it’s because of fond memories (24%).
  • Finances play a part as well, as 80% say they’ll probably hold onto their car as long as they can if they think it’ll save them money in the long run.
  • Despite their attachment to their current vehicle, only 34% would buy the exact same make and model for their next car.
  • For the 47% who will be looking for something different, an electric vehicle is an option.
  • Nearly half (45%) of respondents think electric vehicles are the future of car ownership.
  • Younger generations are more likely to agree, including 69% of Gen Z and 59% of millennials, compared to 32% of baby boomers and 41% of Gen X.
  • Not having to pay for gas is the biggest reason people would consider an electric vehicle (35%), followed by EVs being better for the environment (33%), helping to reduce air pollution (29%) and tax credits (25%).
  • But Americans still have some concerns about EVs, including 66% who anticipate higher ownership costs and 41% who worry an electric vehicle would spend more time in the shop.
