We Are Craving Time Outdoors More Than Ever

We tend to spend the majority of our time inside, but new research suggests we’re not happy about it. According to a new survey of 2-thousand U.S. adults, 58% feel stir-crazy after spending too much time inside. And they feel that way after being inside for 10 and a half hours, on average.

The poll also reveals:

  • To feel refreshed, people need to spend more than an hour (67 minutes) outside every day.
  • As a result, 57% crave spending time outside more than ever before.
  • People say when they do spend time outside, it relaxes them (68%), puts them in a better mood (66%) and helps them clear their head (64%).
  • On the flip side, when they spend more time inside than they’d like, it can leave them with feelings of depression (38%), anxiety (33%) and loneliness (32%).
  • These negative emotions also pop up when outdoor plans get derailed because of bad weather.
  • Almost half (48%) of respondents feel disappointed when their outside plans change, while a third (32%) feel frustrated or annoyed (28%).
  • People’s favorite outdoor activities include grilling or cooking (23%), hiking (14%) and camping (11%).
  • Since the pandemic, 16% prefer traveling to places in nature more, and 15% enjoy taking more trips that benefit their mental health.
  • Two-thirds (67%) of Americans see travel as a form of self-care and 42% say they need to book a trip to “escape” at least once every six months.
  • The trips people are most excited about include going to the beach (44%), visiting national parks (29%) and cross-country road trips (12%).
  • Overall, 83% believe the journey to a destination is part of the vacation itself.
