What We Now Consider The “Perfect” Male & Female Bodies

A new study suggests the era of the “dad bod” may be over, as women are swiping left on physiques with extra padding and beer bellies. The research looks into what people consider the “perfect” male and female form, and it turns out the standard for men and women is not the same.

To find out what people think the ideal body type is, more than 2-thousand adults were shown side-by-side body-fat comparison images and asked which ones they found hottest.

  • For guys' bodies, lean, athletic builds - like those of actors Paul Mescal and Jacob Elordi, were the winner. Specifically, men with around 15% body fat were the top choice.
  • Male bodies with 20% body fat came in second, followed by 25%, and the least attractive was the heaviest one, at 35%.
  • But the results were quite different for women. Instead of razor-thin frames, people attracted to women prefer them with soft, curvy bodies, like Ashley Graham and Beyoncé.
  • Men preferred women’s voluptuous bodies with about 30% body fat most, with a 25% body fat figure coming in second. The body with 45% body fat came in last.

Researchers point out that men and women carry and store body fat differently, so the numbers aren’t exactly apples to apples comparisons. A guy with 15% body fat tends to look fit and athletic, they explain, while a woman with the same 15% might look extremely lean. On the flip side, a woman with 30% body fat can appear curvy and healthy, while a man with that percentage would typically look much heavier.
